7 Summer Activities To Do With Kids in the San Ramon Valley

7 Summer Activities To Do With Kids SRV - Villa PropertiesWhen the children are home full-time for the summer, finding affordable activities in the San Ramon Valley, that they will enjoy may be a bit challenging. After the camps and other outdoor programs what else is there to do?  Well, there are actually quite a few local options to help you round out the summer and keep minds busy and engaged.

1.    Outdoor Movies

Is there anything better than sitting outside. In the dark. Under the stars watching a movie past your bedtime?  The Town of Danville (Moonlight Movies for July and August 2014), The City of San Ramon (Outdoor Movie Nights in August 2014), Bishop Ranch and Dublin (Picnic Flix) offer outdoor movies to entertain the entire family.

2.    Night Hikes

Explore nature at night with a twilight or moonlight hike with the family.  The East Bay Regional Park District offers Tuesday Twilights hikes for the whole family.  Las Trampas Regional Park is scheduled for August 12, 2014.

If you are more inclined to day walks, check out these other programs Hikes for Tykes, Wednesday Walks, and Sunday/Saturday Strolls.

Also, the Mount Diablo Interpretative Association offers information for self guided hikes, as well as guided evening hikes (reservations required).

3.    If They Build IT, they will love it!

Just in time to get the kids excited about school, you can have little Johnny or Jill build their own pencil box for free at The Home Depot in San Ramon.  The classes fill up fast, so call ahead to see if you can attend as well as learn about future Home Depot Kids’ workshops.

Lowes also has their own program, called Build and Grow.

4.    Kids Challenge

The East Bay Regional Parks is also running a Kids Challenge program at their many parks.  The program is based on the California Children’s Outdoor Bill of Rights.  It is self-paced and includes up to 10 activities. The challenge is for kids to complete all of the activities.  Some of the challenges may require adult participation and/or fees. Register to receive the free guide booklet. A commemorative  patch will be sent after completing the challenge (1 per child, while supplies last).

5.    Inspire Imagination

Little hands become crafty hands when taking classes offered at Michaels, Joann’s, Beverly’s, Lake Shore Learning or the Lego Store.

Michaels’ Kids Club – For $2 per child, your child will spend 30 minutes creating anything from their next key chain to a painted canvas for their room.

Jo-Ann Fabric & Crafts Store Kids’ Camp – Sewing, Cake Decorating and Knitting classes will keep the fun going for the rest of the summer.  These classes range between $40 and $60 per class.  However, they also offer free project tutorials for kids, too.

Beverly’s Crafts – Beverly’s offers free online project guides, in addition to local in-store craft classes.  Click here to see the Concord store events.

Lake Shore Learning, Walnut Creek – Every Saturday Lake Shore Learning offers free crafts for kids ages 3 and older. No reservations are necessary.
